On Friday, September 15, Chargé d’Affaires Usha Pitts hosted a reception in honor of women in government and politics. From newcomers to senior stateswomen, there were representatives at every stage of a political career and from all sides of the political divide.
At the event, the Chargé announced new assistance the Embassy is putting forward to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women. The Embassy is donating $1 million in assistance to UN Women for The Bahamas. It is designed to cover the cost of training and raising awareness of gender-based violence.
In her brief remarks the Chargé noted it was a very big year for women’s issues in The Bahamas and expressed hope that the number of women in Parliament would quadruple next election.
