Important Passport Information

Payment Methods & Details

Complete fee information is available here. Acceptable methods of payment are:

  • Online payment at pay.gov (available for adult passport renewals only).
  • Cash (only accepted if an applicant is applying in person at the Embassy), in either exclusively U.S. dollars OR Bahamian dollars.  The Embassy cannot accept a mix of the two currencies;
  • Credit card: Mastercard or Visa only;
  • Bank Draft or Money Order payable to “U.S. Embassy Nassau.”
  • Bahamas Postal Money Orders:   Only “domestic” Bahamas Postal Money Orders (that is, in Bahamian dollars) are accepted.  The Embassy cannot accept “international” Bahamas Postal Money Orders issued in U.S. dollars.

We do not accept personal checks. Please note that consular fees are nonrefundable.

Appointments & Locations

U.S. citizens in The Bahamas or Turks and Caicos Islands can submit their application for a U.S. passport to the American Citizen Services Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Nassau. The actual printing of the passport books takes place at the National Passport Processing Center in the United States, where a passport incorporating a digitized image and other enhanced security features can be produced.  You may expect to wait approximately 7-10 business days, or two calendar weeks, for your new U.S. passport to be received and processed for pick up with us.

SSN Required for Passport Applications

A Social Security Number is required for all passport applications. If you have been issued a Social Security number you must provide it on your application for a U.S. passport. If you are in the Bahamas or Turks & Caicos and require a new or replacement Social Security number card, or are unsure as to whether you have ever been issued one, you should contact the Federal Benefits Unit in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: https://do.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/social-security/.

U.S. Passport Delivery/Passback

You may expect to wait approximately 7-10 business days (2 calendar weeks) for your new U.S. passport book to be ready.  CRBAs and passport cards take approximately 15 business days. Your new passport cannot be collected at U.S. Embassy Nassau, and will have to be returned to you via the options listed below. When selecting CASH ON DELIVERY (DHL or GWS) we will provide the airway bill on the day of your appointment and no action is required prior to your appointment.

Delivery Options:
  • DHL:
    • $21 (Bahamian / US dollars) bank draft, Cash or cards (small fluctuation depending on monthly fuel surcharge).
    • Same Day Delivery – $31.70
    • Home Delivery – $21.25
      • Same Day Delivery & Home delivery only apply for Nassau. It’s an additional charge on top of the $21. Same Day and Home Delivery would apply for Grand Bahamas if requested.
    • All other islands including Abaco, Eleuthera, Spanish Wells and Exuma $35.25.
      • There is no additional charge for family islands.
    • DHL account number OR
    • Prepaid DHL Airway Bill
  • GWS:
    • $17 (Bahamian dollars) bank draft or Postal Money Order payable to GWS; OR
    • CASH ON DELIVERY (COD); OR
    • Prepaid GWS Airway Bill
  • FedEx:
    • $11 (Bahamian dollars) bank draft (Nassau and Freeport) payable to FedEx. Other Islands:  $11.20 plus ODA Charge $28.00 = $39.20; OR
    • FedEx account number; OR
    • Prepaid FedEx Airway Bill 

Security Information

The Embassy does not permit interested third parties such as friends, relatives, attorneys, or business contacts to attend non-immigrant visa interviews with the applicant.

The following items are not allowed in the Embassy during your interview:

  • Mobile phones
  • Electronic personal digital assistants
  • Car key fobs
  • Cameras
  • Audio or video recording devices
  • Laptop or tablet computers
  • Portable music players
  • Large travel bags, backpacks, briefcases or suitcases
  • Cosmetics (including, but not limited to, spray perfume/cologne and talcum/baby powder)
  • Glass bottles (a plastic baby bottle for a nursing child may be allowed)
  • Food items
  • Sealed envelopes or packages

*Other items may be prohibited at the discretion of Embassy security staff. U.S. Embassy Nassau has no storage available. If you are found to have prohibited items, you will be asked to dispose of them prior to entry.

Reasonable Accommodation

If you need reasonable accommodation for your appointment, we encourage you to request your accommodation immediately once you schedule your appointment. We make every effort to provide accommodations to persons with disabilities and medical conditions. Reasonable accommodations vary, depending on the situation and the person’s needs.
Examples of accommodations include, but are not limited to:

  • If you require a private appointment due to a medical condition or disability, we may schedule an alternative time for you to come in for your interview.
  • If you or your child has special needs that requires a private appointment in a quiet space without distractions, we may schedule an alternative time for you or your family to come in for your interview.
  • If you are unable to speak, you may be allowed to respond to questions in an agreed-upon nonverbal manner such as using pen and paper.
  • If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may bring a sign language interpreter to translate during the interview if needed.
  • If you have low vision, we may provide you with communications in large print.

If you are unable to provide fingerprints because of a medical condition, including birth defects, physical deformities, skin conditions, you may qualify for a fingerprint waiver for certain fingers.

  • Interview waivers are only granted in extreme situations, such as having a medical condition that requires flying in an air ambulance.

The waiting room of the Consular Section and its restroom is wheelchair-accessible.
